Is Headcovering “false holiness?”

The question:

We don’t have to cover our heads, we are free in Christ. Isn’t that false holiness to do that?

We are free in Christ but the Bible cautions us to not use our freedom for a license to sin.

Paul wrote a LOT of the New Testament. He is the main one that taught us about our freedom in Christ. Galations comes to mind. Either Paul knows what he is talking about or he has lied to us all.

Paul wrote those verses in I Cor 11 and he cited 3 very *long-term* reasons for covering.

  • The headship order, God, Jesus, Man, Woman
  • The order of creation, Man first, then woman
  • The angels

I believe Paul. I take to heart what he wrote in the New Testament and I combine it with what Jesus Christ said. Jesus said that if you love Him, you will obey Him.

New Testament obedience does not mean that we are not free in Christ. The words “false holiness” are strong. I beg, plead and pray every day for the Holy Spirit to fill me to overflowing. I pray for the eyes of my understanding to be opened when I read the Bible. The Lord is HOLY—no one disputes that who is a Christian.

We have PUT ON Christ.

Christ is the Spirit, the Bible teaches us.

His holiness is in us and we want the fruit of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We want to live lives that please the Lord.

We are free in Christ but the Bible cautions us to not use our freedom for a license to sin.

We obey what we are told to do. Covering is taught and we are obeying…not to be false…not to earn our salvation.

We cover to obey and we obey because we love the Lord.
